This is a vintage door curtain of about 70 years of age. It was woven by the mother of the woman holding it in the attached photo. Laos people did not used to have rigid doors inside their houses, but instead, had woven door curtains with protective spirit motifs to provide spiritual protection for those in the room. This door curtain has a bird, stars, and a spiritual elephant bird pregnant with a mythological river serpent and with an ancestor spirit on its back. The textile is handwoven with village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk on a cotton blend ground and with metallic thread woven in for specialness and impact. The center textile is bordered by the original black cotton that is showing its age.
