Name: Sophisticated Naga and Hong Shaman Cloth
Item#: 18004
This design has two primary figures - the saang hong (mythological elephant bird) and the naga (mythological river serpent). There are pregnant curled tailed naga, pregnant two-headed naga, and saang hong pregnant with (non-pregnant!) naga and with an ancestor spirit and a temple on their backs. The creatures are so fantastically intermingled and colored that it is difficult to parse each specific figure without close inspection. Their colors and patterning make for a lively piece of art, tempered by the more elegant and subtle coloring used within the textile. The piece is handwoven from village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk. The piece comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer, Souk, modeling the piece. Souk won both first and second price in the first Laos national textile competition in 1993 - a truly master weaver, dyer, and designer.
