Name: Saffron 2-Headed Elephant Bird Hanging

Item#: 17047

A brilliant saffron, charming, bright wall hanging or furniture decoration with 2-headed saang hong (mythological elephant birds), pregnant with naga (mythological river serpents). The fascinating thing about this motif is that the saang hong is standing on its feet on one side of it's body, then the other half flips upside down with the feet in the air and the head on the "ground". It reminds me of a push-me-pull-you from Dr. Doolittle, but half upside down. While they are somewhat whimsical creature from a western perspective, within their culture they are serious motifs that represent aspects of the local belief systems. Regarless of how you think of the motifs, the cloth is striking and colorful. handwoven from village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk this textile comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer, Phout, holding the cloth.
