Name: Phii Nyak Shoulder Cloth
Item#: 17046
Phii Nyak are the primary larger motifs in this shoulder cloth. The phii nyak is a mythological giant spirit that lives in the forest. Children are told to not go into the forest alone as the phii yak will get them and rip their heads off, suck their guts outs and they will never be able to go home again. (The Lao form of the boogeyman!). When woven into textiles, phii nyak become protective spirits. It used to be that women would only weave these motifs when in a strong frame of mind to work with such a powerful spirit's image. Small naga (mythological river serpents) and flowers surround the primary figures. Handwoven of village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk, this piece will protect the wearer or their house if it is displayed on a wall or table!
