Name: Myriad of Naga Textile in Red

Item#: 16002

This large shaman cloth or ceremonial blanket is made from village-raised, hand-reeled silk, naturally dyed, and handwoven on a hand built loom. The primary red color is made from lac, the resin exuded by a scale bug. The motifs are of two-headed naga (mythological river serpents) of many types - with diamond heads, triangle heads, some with alternating colors of flowers making up their bodies indicating fertility, and some solid. There are also curled tailed naga in the borders, and ancestor spirits in the diamonds between the naga in the body of the textile. Textile comes with a photo of the designer and natural dyer, Phout, wearing the textile.

Size: 29.5" x 87"

Origins: Houaphanh Province, Laos
