Name: Graphically Striking 2-Headed Naga Textile

Item#: 18011

The naga (mythological river serpent), recently declared an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, fills this textile in a dramatically colored design. The naga is a creature that is believed to live in the rivers, and, in land-locked Laos, the rivers are vital as they irrigate the rice fields, and as rice is life, the naga are perceived to be female figures. Originally intended as a shaman cloth to be used in ceremonies to help the shaman connect with the ancestor world, this textile makes for a striking piece of art on any wall, and it can be worn as a shawl to special events. Comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer, Souk, modeling this textile.

Size: 31.25" x 100"

Origins: Houaphan Province, Laos
