Name: Gold On Burgundy Naga
Item#: 18013
This elegantly complex patterning of two-headed naga (mythological river serpents) intertwined with each other and surrounding diamonds of more naga and flowers is primarily in a rich gold color on a deep red or burgundy. The textile is made of village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk. The gold color is from the bark from the Kor Ben tree (Duobanga Grandiflora) and the deep red from lac. The complexity of the pattern and color interplay makes it look like the figures are almost three dimensional and moving. This textile would be folded and knelt upon in front of an alter by the shaman to help reach the ancestor world, or, when backed and bordered with handspun cotton fabric, used as a ceremonial wedding blanket. The tassels on the bottom are inverted silkworm cocoons cut to resemble flowers. A quietly elegant textile, this piece comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer, Lun, modeling the textile.
