Name: Elegant Naga on Black
Item#: 18008
One of the best in our current collection is this two-headed naga (mythological river serpent) shaman cloth from Souksakhone. This is handwoven from village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk, and is in elegant, earthy, muted but clear colors that show the quality of the weaving, and design. The naga are depicted with both diamond and triangle heads, pregnant and not, and surround the diamonds of flowers with ancestor spirits in the centers. The sophisticated coloration includes fresh indigo (blue), 4-day fermented indigo that is first soaked cold then warm (teal), haem or "climbing turmeric" (yellow), kor ben or duobanga grandiflora (gold), lac (red), and kor ben then dirt soaked for 4 days and 3 nights to make a true black. The textile is fringed with inverted silk worm cocoons cut to resemble flowers. The textile comes with a photo of Souk, the natural dyer and designer, modeling the piece.
