This small altar cloth or auspicious cloth is use in Laos as a gift cloth for someone who has come a long way to visit, particularly during major celebrations or ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. Gifts of cloth are very important within the cultures of Lao, particularly for the Lao/Tai people. Each cloth is filled with mythological creatures that can provide spiritual protection to whomever carries the piece. This one has curled tailed naga (mythological river serpents) in gold in the center. Perfect for the little table top or an empty spot on a shelf - even framed on the wall. Woven of village raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk.
