Naga (mythological river serpents) are vital figures in Lao mythology as the naga live in the rivers which irrigate the rice fields, and, as rice is life, are considered female spirits. This pice includes not only curled tailed naga, but also two headed pregnant naga, as depicted by the multi-colored flowers constituting the details of their bodies. This textile is woven as a traditional large shaman cloth upon which a shaman would kneel in front of the altar and used the spirits woven in the cloth to help him or her reach the ancestor world to bring down an ancestor spirit to help with the ceremony. Handwoven of village-raised, hand reeled, naturally dyed silk. Comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer modeling the cloth.
