Name: Blue Saang Hong Skirt or Wall Hanging
Item#: 18009
In Laos, women wear all-silk skirts (sinh) for ceremonial and special occasions. This piece can also be worn as a shawl, or used as a wall hanging. This textile was woven by Souk, who is also the pattern designer and natural dyer of this piece. The silk is village raised and hand reeled, naturally dyed by Souk, and handwoven by her on her handbuilt loom. Souk is considered the best natural dyer in the region, and won first and second prizes in the first national textile competition in 1993. Her work is spectacular. This piece is filled with motifs of saang hong (mythological elephant birds) pregnant with naga (mythological river serpents), with ancestor spirits on their backs. These are bordered with stripes of flowers and horses, separated by rainbow stripes that represent the belly of the hong bird - a mythological bird whose belly is the rainbow. Comes with a photo of Souk holding the textile.
