Name: Diamond of Naga on Deep Blue
Item#: 15340
This silk shoulder cloth with predominantly bright blue pattern on a deep, dark navy has a primary motif of Box of Naga (mythological river serpents). The Box of Naga pattern is traditionally used in the Tai Daeng women's headdresses, as the Tai Daeng traditional belief is that women have a soft spot on their heads through which evil spirits can enter and make them ill - the Box of Naga protect against the evil spirits. Supplementary colors used include bright spots of red, yellow, orange, white, olive green, steel grey, and navy. This textile is made from village-raised, natural-dyed silk, and is handwoven using the discontinuous supplemental weft style of weaving in Houaphan Province in NE Laos. The fringe of “flowers” is made of inverted silk cocoons and silk tassles. A photo of the artist wearing her textile is included.
