Name: Curly-Tailed Naga in Red
Pregnant, curled-tailed Naga (mythological river serpents) make up the primary motif in this bright red silk shoulder cloth. The every-third alternating color inside the Naga's bodies represent fertility. Secondary patterns include multiple representations of flowers. The supplementary colors are orange, white, green, marigold, red, and green. This textile is made from village-raised, natural-dyed silk, and is handwoven using the discontinuous supplemental weft style of weaving in Houaphan Province in NE Laos. The fringe is made of braided silk tassles. A photo of the artist wearing her textile is included.
