Name: Brilliant Blue Diamonds of Naga

Item#: 15275

Diamonds of naga (mythological river serpents) and flowers are the primary figures in this textile. The diamonds of naga pattern is a traditional Tai Daeng (Red Tai) pattern that was traditionally woven on women's headscarves where the diamonds were placed on top of the woman's head where it was believed that they had a soft spot through which evil spirits could enter to make them ill. The naga woven on the headscarves provided spiritual protection and helped the women stay well. The colors are natural dyes, made brilliant through the use of village raised, hand reeled, handwoven silk. A photo of the weaver modeling her textile is included with purchase.

Size: 17 in. x 85 in.

Origins: Houaphanh Province, Laos
