Name: Boy's Dzao Hat

Item#: RDBH40-1

Red Dzao/Yao children and babies all wear handmade, highly decorated hats that make them appear as flowers to the evil spirits flying overhead, so the spirits don't bother the children. This hat is for a boy as shown by the alternating panels of red and blue cloth. It includes glass beads, coins, one bell (note: other bells are missing), and red yarn tassels for decoration around the top and a bead chin strap. In addition, the front of the hat has four triangle patterns of older handmade aluminum half-moons, typical on these hats with five alternating flowers of jobs seed beads (note: two jobs seed beads are broken on the viewer's right side) with an aluminum half-moon as the center. The bottom edge of the hat has numerous, thin, applique strips of commercial red, white, and blue commercial cotton.

Size: 17.5 in. circumference

Origins: Lao Cai Province, Vietnam
