Name: Phii Nyak Tapestry Shaman's Shawl

Item#: 8488

This unusual shaman's shawl woven of locally-raised, hand-reeled, naturally-dyed silk displays the weaver's skill with two styles of weaving. The large center panel is woven using the "tapestry weave" method; this panel's motifs are of the phii-nyak, a vicious Tai Daeng spirit that protects the innocent (the repeating spirit has a diamond-shaped head with a center eye, two large arms that curl outward, and no body). The broad end panels are woven in the "discontinuous supplemental weft" style, and the motifs are of the crested naga (river serpent). The ends are an unusually rich-toned brown; the fringe is decorated with inverted silk cocoons that have been turned into flowers.

Size: 74" x 32" (188 cm x 81 cm)

Origins: Houaphon Province, Laos

Price: $835.00
