Name: Mythological Creature Shoulder Cloth
With a deep red warp (the threads going the long way on the cloth) and a teal weft (the main threads going from left to right), this hand-reeled, naturally dyed, handwoven textile has the shimmer we think of with silk. It is used in Lao as a shoulder cloth for women to wear to temple, and this one is covered with alternating rows of two-headed Saang Hong (mythological elephant-birds) and rows of flower diamonds, separated by single rows of flowers, all delineated by rows of rainbow colors, representing the Hong bird - a mythological bird who's belly is the rainbow. Comes with a photo of the weaver modeling the scarf.
Size: 7 in x 82 in.
Origins: Houaphon Province, Laos
