Name: Box of Naga & Tapestry Shawl

Item#: 199

The box of naga (mythical river serpents) pattern is used on many women's textiles, particularly on headscarves, where the headscarf is wrapped with the box of naga on the purported "soft spot" on women's heads as the naga will protect against any evil spirits entering and harming the woman. In this instance, the pattern is used through the body of the textile, providing similar protection, with the tapestry weave water pattern section framing the more complex supplementary weft naga. Luxurious thick fringes echo the additional water pattern stripes on the bottom edges of the textile. Comes with a photo of the natural dyer and designer of the piece.

Size: 66 in. x 17.5 in.

Origins: Houaphon Province, Laos
