Name: Curly Tailed Naga Boats on Black Shoulder Cloth

Item#: 15361

Curled Tailed Naga boats (mythological river serpents) decorate this silk shoulder cloth. On the back of the naga are temples with a small bird in them, and the boats are surrounded by more small birds and flowers. Naga boats are used by the shaman to reach the spirit world to bring back an ancestor spirit to help with the ceremony being performed. The black ground of this textile makes the supplementary colors of olive green, red, blue, orange, teal, and white really pop. This textile is made from village-raised, natural-dyed silk, and is handwoven using the discontinuous supplemental weft style of weaving in Houaphan Province in NE Laos. The fringe of “flowers” is made of inverted silk cocoons and silk tassles. A photo of the artist wearing her textile is included.

Size: 6.5" (17 cm) x 88" (224 cm)

Origins: Houaphon Province, Laos

Price: $195.00
