Name: 60-old Black Ceremonial Blanket with Border

Item#: 0010

Dramatic 60-year-old silk ceremonial blanket with hand-spun cotton border and backing. Top band is decorated with a row of small metal spring and point decorations; this is the only blanket we have seen with this addition. The designs in this older cloth include two-headed siho (mythical elephant-lions) with one head and feet on the "floor", and the other two feet and head in the "air", naga (mythical river serpents), temple roofs, giant spirits (fierce protective spirits) and crested triangle-headed naga. Superbly woven, although cloth does have a curve toward one side keeping it from being completely rectangular.

Size: 67 in. x 36 in.

Origins: Houaphon Province, Laos
